South Fremont’s Bryan Popocatl fires a throw to first base.

After losing to the Sugar earlier in the district playoffs, South Fremont bounced back to force a third district matchup with the Diggers beating South Fremont 12-6 in a back and forth battle Monday.

Sugar took an early lead going up 2-1 in the first inning but South battled (batted) back in the third inning with four runs to take the lead. The Diggers grabbed the lead again in the fifth after scoring a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. South took the lead for good by scoring two runs in the sixth then the Cougars extended their lead by nearly doubling their runs with five in the seventh.

Kyler Yancey went 4/4 at the plate for South Fremont and Bryan Popocatl went 3/3 for a team-leading three RBIs. Karter Yancey went 2/5 with two doubles and German Gonzalez went 2/3 with a double. Jake Thueson also hit a double and Sawyer Klingler had the team’s lone stolen base.

Caleb Norman was the only Digger to get multiple hits going 2/4 at the plate. Kaden Malstrom hit a home run and Curtis Drake, Grady Rasmussen and Tanner Harris each hit doubles. Norman and Drake also stole bases.

Sawyer Klingler pitched a little over four innings for the Cougars allowing eight hits and six runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Kyler Yancey pitched two innings allowing no hits or runs with two strikeouts and a walk.

Drake pitched a little over five innings allowing ten hits and six runs with eight strikeouts and two walks. Kyzon Garner threw 13 pitches allowing no hits and one run with no strikeouts and three walks. Harris pitched an inning allowing two hits with five runs with no strikes and two walks.

Sugar and South will play a winner-take-all district final today at 4 p.m in St. Anthony if the weather allows.
