North Fremont boys basketball won their last three meetings with Sugar-Salem by five, three and one points. Add those margins together and double it. That’s how much the Huskies won by Wednesday — 62-44.

North Fremont head coach Shannon Hill felt his team had struggled in second quarters thus far this season so he challenged them to own the second quarter Wednesday before the game.

They won the second quarter 22-9 after taking a two-point lead into the quarter.

“The second quarter has kind of been the worst quarter for us throughout the year and, tonight, it was by far our best quarter,” Hill said. “I felt really good about that.”

Shannon Hill gave a junior post Jacob Belles who scored one point but provided rebounding and and defense off of the bench after moving in the offseason.

”He’s more of a football player sized kid than a basketball player sized kid,” Hill said. “But he really helps hold the game down for us. He’s a big body and he gets rebounds. He only got one point for us tonight but he just makes a lot of difference.”

Beating a 3A powerhouse like Sugar once seemed impossible for the 2A Huskies. Now they have four straight wins.

As big as Wednesday’s win felt for the Huskies, Hill said it won’t mean much if it doesn’t lead to district success.

“Tonight is a big win for us,” Hill said. “It just doesn’t mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. It’s just another win.”

North Fremont will next play Malad on Friday.
