In the wake of COVID-19, the Sugar-Salem High School will be holding its 2020 graduation online.
"Under the direction of the administration, a committee of students, administrators, and parents have met to explore possibilities for a 2020 graduation ceremony at SSHS to recognize and celebrate 165 Seniors," according to a press release from SSHS. "In an effort to be compliant with state recommendations, SSHS will host a 'virtual graduation ceremony' on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 7:00 p.m."
The graduates will be organized into separate rooms of nine with one teacher steering graduates towards the auditorium one at a time.
"A few students and administrators will speak, then each graduate will have the opportunity to walk across the auditorium stage and receive their diploma, then exit the exterior west door and be positioned at a safe social distance from one another on the yellow parking lot markers around the school building," according to the press release.
Residents can attend the ceremony virtually through the Sugar-Salem High School Facebook page where they will be live streaming the event.
"The Facebook live stream includes a prepared slideshow of all Seniors graduating, and that begins at 6:15 p.m. on May 22nd, and the virtual graduation will commence at 7:00 p.m. May 22nd," according to the press release.
After the graduation ceremony residents are encouraged to drive through the school's parking lot as a "parade of cars." They can enter through the west side of the parking lot, drive past graduates and then exit on the east side of the school.
Principal Jared Jenks said the class of 2020 is the most decorated class of Sugar-Salem High School. They've won 19 state academic championships, 31 team state championships and have been awarded over $3 million in scholarships.
"They've been driven, committed, worked hard and they've bought into the process of what it takes to be successful and have shown great leadership during their entire time here at Sugar-Salem High School... Once a Digger always a Digger," he said.
