REXBURG – Sugar City and Rexburg residents will have the chance to meet with city council candidates from their respective cities during two upcoming “Meet the Candidates” forum scheduled this month in both Rexburg and Sugar City.

The chamber and the Standard Journal are teaming up to present both events. The Standard Journal plans to live stream both events. The Rexburg event will be held at noon, Oct. 9, at the Romance Theater while the Sugar City forum is scheduled at 7 p.m., Oct 17, at the Sugar-Salem High School.

“These are forums where the citizens of each community will have an opportunity to meet the people who are running to be leaders of their communities,” said Rexburg Chamber of Commerce CEO Christopher Mann.

During each forum, Hyrum Erickson, chairman of the Legislative Committee at the chamber, will serve as the moderator.

Each candidate will be given a chance to make a two-minute opening statement where they’ll introduce themselves to voters. A chamber member will ask the first set of questions dealing with various community issues. Erickson will chose the next set of questions provided by the audience prior to the event. Candidates will be given one minute to answer each question. Each candidate will also be given the chance to make a closing statement.

Following each forum, dessert will be served by the candidates themselves.

“We’ll turn them into real public servants,” Mann joked.

Mann reported that the candidate forums are a part of the chamber's ongoing efforts to serve the community.

“The Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce provides the service to our communities as part of our legislative community action,” he said.

Residents are invited to attend both forums. For more information call 208-356-5700.
