Dear Editor,

Your Nov. 1 article about the Sugar City-Madison Sheriff’s service agreement didn’t mention an important fact. All property owners in the entire county, which include all city property owners, pay the same rate of taxes into the county budget as rural residents.

Therefore; Sugar residents have already paid their share of the Sheriff’s budget and are entitled to the same service, even if the city has a police department (optional). Cities are not required to have police departments and if they do it’s double taxation for law enforcement.

St. Anthony considered consolidation with the Sheriff’s Office a few years ago, which I did favor. One larger, better trained and better equipped; more professional department would be more efficient and economical for the entire county. Besides, you would get to vote for the leader every four years.

Sincerely,

Lee Winegar of St. Anthony
