MADISON COUNTY − A six-year-old boy died on Aug. 13 around 8:31 p.m. while swimming in his family’s above-ground pool.

Madison County Deputy Isaac Payne said the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the boy’s name yet out of respect for the family.

He said the child was from Washington State and was in the Thornton area visiting family. The child’s babysitter found the boy unconscious in an above-ground pool in his families yard. It is unknown as to how he became unconscious. EMS, the Madison Fire Department, and the MCSO responded to the scene.

Payne said they immediately began life-saving efforts including CPR and then rushed the child to Madison Memorial Hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital around 10 p.m.

Payne said it was a tragic accident.

”Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” read a press release from the MCSO. “If you are connected to this event in any way we would ask that you come together as a community to support each other at this time.”
