Memorial Day offers America the opportunity to honor and celebrate the commitment, dedication and sacrifices made by each and every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coastguardsman and Reservist who has protected our way of life. It’s a day to publicly thank our Service Members for their many sacrifices and let them know we hold them in the highest regard.

Freedom is not free, and we are ever-grateful to those who have been willing to pay the cost. Every member of the Armed Services, at the time of their enlistment, wrote out a blank check payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including their very lives.

Those who serve our country epitomize selflessness. To ensure our freedom and peaceful way of life, these individuals committed to leaving their families and lives behind to meet and defeat the enemies of democracy on the field of battle. They are the guardians of everything we know, cherish and love here at home, and have contributed to the betterment of humanity around the globe. It’s unsettling to imagine what America would be like today without the precious freedoms and liberties we enjoy, made possible by those who protect and defend our way of life.

While one day of thanks doesn't serve to repay the debt we owe America’s defenders, it serves to rekindle our appreciation for them. So, this Memorial Day, please take the time to remember and thank our country’s heroes for their selfless dedication, sacrifices and service.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3012 and family members will be placing flags on veterans graves in all of the cemeteries in Madison County over the Memorial Day weekend. They will also be putting out flags in Rexburg's downtown and commercial areas on Memorial Day/Monday May 27. In addition, the VFW and its Auxiliary will be distributing Buddy Poppies at Walmart from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday/May 25.
