SALT LAKE CITY - The Deseret News reports that a 28-year-old man attacked and wounded four people with knives during a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church service in Goiania, Brazil on Sunday.
The man attacked shortly after threatening the congregation, it said.
“We are saddened to report that this morning a man entered a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Goiânia, Brazil, during a worship service and threatened the congregation with multiple knives," said the faith's Brazil Area Presidency in a press release.
The attacker injured four church members ages 31, 33, 40 and 42 years of age. The attacker also suffered wounds. Police later arrested the man. All injured are receiving medical care, said the newspaper.
"The church is providing support to those who were present during the incident, and we are praying for all involved," the statement said.
The newspaper cited Globo.com that reported the attacker came into the church with two knives. As church members ran, the man stabbed two worshipers and also hit two more church members.
“The 31-year-old was treated and released and the two older victims were in stable condition. The 33-year-old was transferred to another hospital for the wound on his wrist,” it said.
According to the newspaper the Church has 1.5 million Brazilian members.
