A Rexburg man died during an officer-involved shooting Monday night.

Rexburg Police Chief Shane Turman said police were called to the North Brenchley Apartments at 430 South Third West at about 8:11 p.m. for a report of an unwanted subject.

The incident unfolded with police shooting at the 50-year-old suspect, who was pronounced dead on the scene. No officers were injured.

“Shortly after making contact shots were fired. At this time, we don’t have any answers to what exactly occurred, and it is unclear what lead up to shots being fired,” the police department said in a press release.

Turman said the department will not be releasing the names of the suspect or the officers involved at this time. More details about the incident will be released in the future.

The investigation of the incident is now turned over to the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force. The task force is made up of detectives from multiple law enforcement agencies.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is a standard practice during incidents similar to this, Turman said.

“That’s not to say that they’ve done anything wrong, it’s part of the protocol for the task force,” he said.

The fatal officer-involved shooting was the fourth in a week in eastern Idaho. The others were in Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Blackfoot.
