Serving your fellow man just got easier.
The Greater Idaho Falls Area Public Affairs Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently launched a website in east Idaho called JustServe.org to connect those looking to serve their community with those who need service.
“The JustServe website is an awesome tool to bring individuals, families and groups together with organizations in need of service volunteers,” said Dwight Whittaker, JustServe co-coordinator for the Greater Idaho Falls area with his wife, Kay. “Over the last several months we have been introducing the program in the community with great success, and now we are ready to let everyone in the area know this great tool is available for use and get them signed up.”
As individuals have free time during which they want to serve, they can look on JustServe.org for service opportunities that match their availability. They can look for their zip code, and local community organizations in need of volunteers to accomplish their missions and project goals can place these opportunities to serve on the website.
“Our goal is to have everyone in the community signed up to participate on JustServe and then have community organizations regularly place their service opportunities on the website,” said Doug Nelson, director of public affairs for the Greater Idaho Falls area. “It’s a matchmaking website for those who want to serve and organizations who need volunteers.”
Although the website is provided through the LDS church, it is available for everyone to use.
“It’s not designed to be exclusive of the LDS church,” said Media Relations Specialist Steve Poulsen. “It’s designed to be for communities.”
Poulsen said the website has actually been going for a couple of years now, starting in the California area and spreading since then.
He said it is a universal website, but it takes understanding and awareness for it to work in each area.
“The need for service is not exclusive to any one area,” Poulsen said.
Poulsen said there hasn’t been a lot of talk about JustServe.org from church leaders, but he thinks there will be in the near future.
“You’ll see the church doing more with it as it gets out there,” he said.
He said it takes just minutes to get registered on JustServe.org, and there is no cost to join. There is also an app for Android and Apple devices.
Poulsen also said this website has the potential to be revolutionary.
“I really think it’s going to have a dramatic impact,” he said. “It’s in for the long run.”
