A new business will take up residence at the old Walmart building in the upcoming weeks. It is currently doing construction and renovation work on the building prior to moving in.
Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill recently announced that Harbor Freight Tools would be moving into the building located on Second East. The building had been empty for at least four years after Walmart moved into its new location at 1450 N. 2nd East.
“I’m thrilled to have someone moving in there, so it’s not an empty building any more,” Merrill said.
According to Harbor Freight Tools webpage, the Rexburg store will be its eighth such facility in the Gem State. It also has stores in Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls, Lewiston, Nampa, Pocatello and Twin Falls. The company has a total of 1,000 stores throughout the country and has been family owned for 30 years.
Harbor Freight Tools will be the second facility to open up inside the old Walmart location in recent weeks. In June, the Madison County Driver’s License and car registration office moved into the building’s former Payless Shoes location.
The tool company moving in means the building will once again be home to various facilities, Merrill said.
“It’s nice to see the empty buildings fill up, have some activity and have some life breathed back in. It will bring back life again to that area of town,” Merrill said.
According to Merrill, Harbor Freight Tools contacted the city about seven months ago looking for retail space in Rexburg.
“We directed them to that, and they decided that’s a good spot,” he said.
The company offers various types of equipment, Merrill said.
“It sells all kinds of tools, tarps, gadgets and things for home repairs,” he said.
Merrill says that Rexburg officials continually receive interest from businesses and private citizens considering moving here.
“Because of our emphasis on being a strong family community, people like the way Rexburg looks and feels,” he said.
Merrill says the city officials like to think positive and always expect businesses will locate in Rexburg’s empty buildings. To ensure that, the city works to make the city look appealing and to offer companies great deals to locate in Rexburg, he said.
“We can make our town as attractive as possible both from a physical standpoint and from a standpoint of the city being welcoming and easing off of on rules and regulations. It’s to help businesses as much as we can. That’s our goal,” he said.
Harbor Freight Tools is setting up shop in a great place to do business, Merrill said.
“It’s a really good location. I’m glad somebody recognized that and is taking advantage of that,” Merrill said.
