REXBURG—Brigham Young University-Idaho has gained the attention of the Westboro Baptist Church, which allegedly announced that members will be protesting on the campus of BYU-Idaho this weekend.

A website that claims to represent the organization,, posted a news release on May 31, calling for a protest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday June 9, and Sunday June 10.

The news release made accusations of "evils" committed by the LDS church's founding prophet, Joseph Smith, and claimed that those who belong to the church will "suffer" with homosexuals.

"Lord willing, WBC will preach Christ to the 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rexburg, ID," the news release stated.

Attempts were made to confirm that protests scheduled for this weekend are actually happening, but the Westboro Baptist Church has not responded. A BYU-Idaho spokesman was also reached out to, but was unavailable for comment at the time.

Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill spoke to the Standard Journal about the possibility of a visit from a hate group this weekend. He said he hopes people will keep to their weekend summer routines.

“I just hope that everyone will go about their normal Saturday and Sunday activities and be the good Rexburg people that they are," he said. "If that hate group has no audience, the will have accomplished nothing.”
