What school do you teach at?

Sugar Salem Junior High School.

What department are you with and what classes do you teach?

I teach math and history.

How long have you been teaching in general?

At the school you are at now? I am in my 26th year, 16 at my current location.

What made you decide to be a teacher?

I honestly don’t remember. I have several relatives who became teachers and that probably had something to do with it.

What do you enjoy about being a teacher?

Working with fantastic youth, also working with amazing colleagues.

What are some challenges?

The biggest challenge is dealing with state policies and procedures that come out of Boise and seem to change yearly.

What is an experience you have had as a teacher that stands out to you?

There are dozens I could name, but what comes to mind first is teaching for the Department of Juvenile Corrections for six years. The experience taught me that there are no bad kids, just bad decisions.

Why did you decide to teach at the school you are currently at?

I really enjoy the area and there was an opening here that fit my strengths.

What is something interesting about you most of your students don’t know?

I have surfed in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. I prefer the Pacific.

What are some things that are different in the education system now compared to when you first started teaching/when you were a student?

I would say the biggest difference is the technology level, which seems to change almost daily. I am what is known as a veteran teacher and I have a hard time staying on top of things.
