Recently, the Veterans of Foreign Wars National 2020 Spring Legislative Conference was held in Washington D.C. Department of Idaho VFW representatives attended the conference asking Congressional Officials for support on pro-veteran legislation.
“Since 1949, the VFW’s semi-annual Legislative Conference has provided an opportunity for VFW leaders from each state to personally lobby their respective lawmakers, and urge them to continue improving the programs and services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs,” according to a press release from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
According to the press release, VFW National Commander-in-Chief William “Doc” Schmitz’s attended the conference. He testified at a special joint hearing of the House and Senate Committees on Veterans’ Affairs.
“Topping the veteran’s list of VFW legislative priorities was updating the list of conditions associated with exposure to Agent Orange, improving VA health care including for women veterans and treatment of traumatic brain injuries,” the release read. “Other priorities included improving burn pits research and accountability, allowing military retirees to receive full retirement pay and disability pay without offset and our obligation to locate and recover our POW/MIA’s from past wars.”
During the conference, the winner of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship was announced. Liliane Anderson from Rigby was named the recipient for her speech “What Makes America Great.” She acquired a $1,500 scholarship, a laptop and a trip to the Freedoms Foundation Valley Forge Youth and Leadership Conference in the summer.
