Plan for road between Rexburg, Sugar adjusted

STANDARD JOURNAL MAP/TYLER WHITWORTH

SUGAR CITY -- The designs for the East Parkway Corridor, a future roadway that may eventually belt around Rexburg and Sugar City, are coming together.

Keller Associates Inc., the engineering firm in charge of the project, has held two public meetings so far to get public feedback for the plan.

Last Thursday, the firm met with the Sugar City Council, members of the Sugar City Planning and Zoning Commission and the Sugar

City Transportation Committee to discuss Sugar City's role in the project.

Prior to the meeting, the East Parkway Plan did not have a definite entrance into Sugar City, but rather several suggestions on where the corridor might end.

The corridor plan details a road that will begin heading east off University Boulevard turning north past Millhollow Road up until it reaches State Highway 33 and Sugar City.

The proposed road is detailed in the Madison County Transportation Plan.

During the meeting, Forsgen Associates, the local engineering firm working to develop the Sugar City Transportation Plan, presented its opinion on where the corridor entrance should be, after which City Councilman Harold Harris gave his input as chairman of the Sugar City Transportation Committee.

The consensus by the Sugar City officials was that the corridor should intersect onto Seventh East near Sugar-Salem High School or slightly east of the school.

"We felt like the entrance was the best way because Seventh East already has a bridge over the Teton River," said Harris. "It would also be in the most noninvasive part of the community, while still allowing the residents of the community to get to Rexburg without taking Second East."

Some concerns were expressed among the City Council about the large amount of traffic the road might feed into a school zone. This argument was countered by a suggestion that a four-lane road would allow for bus traffic to have its own lane.

While nothing is finalized regarding the plan, the input of the Sugar City officials and of Madison County residents at a meeting last month are helping to shape the future roads in the area.

"We've got a pretty good idea with Sugar City now," said Todd Tuckett, a representative of Keller Associates. "We have a basic idea, and now its just refining it to see what the public really wants. Public input is driving this process"

In the coming months, Keller Associates will hold several more public meetings in Madison County.
