Rexburg--The Madison Bobcats girls basketball team took an early lead, pushed on the gas and never looked back.

Madison defeated the Twin Falls Bruins 73-40 at Madison High School Friday night. The victory improved the Bobcats' record to 6-4 on the season.

Madison had a marginal 14-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Bobcats really opened things up in the second quarter behind Brin Neff's eight points and all-around balanced scoring.

Eight different Bobcats scored on the night, with five scoring in the double figures.

The Twin Falls Bruins did respond in the third quarter, outscoring the Bobcats and crawling back from the 25-point half time deficit. The Madison coaching wanted constant performance from their squad as they prepare to face another conference foe next Tuesday.

"They did well, but at times they played, should I say, complacent," said Madison assistant coach Erick Wills. "We took some timeouts and had a chat. We need to step it up, especially since we're going up against a conference team next, Highland."

Madison was led in scoring by junior point guard Brin Neff, who scored 14 points on 4 of 15 shooting and 5-of-7 free-throw shooting. Chari Hawkins and Erica George contributed 12 points each, and Sarah Erickson and Brittney Jensen added ten points apiece.

Madison, currently second in the 5A High Country Conference, play the first-place Highland Rams in Pocatello next Tuesday. The Bruins fell to 3-6 with the loss.

At Sugar City, The Sugar-Salem boys basketball team fended off a pesky Snake River team, winning 43-40.

"We had a barn-burner tonight," said Sugar-Salem coach Jay Miller in a phone interview after the win. "Snake held the lead once early, but we led the rest of the way."

Sugar-Salem was led in scoring by senior guard/forward Brennan Bean, who led all scorers with 16 points. Junior forward Cameron Hastings added 10 points in the contest.

"The kids were excited to win," Miller said. "And they were excited about getting closer to accomplishing some team goals that they had set for themselves."

While the points helped the Diggers maintain a slim lead for the balance of the game, their effort on the defensive end helped seal the deal.

"Tyler Rhoton had a good defensive performance," said Miller. "And Jordon Ostermiller, Bryden Morris, and Cameron Hastings did some things rebounding that really helped us tonight."

The Diggers are now 4-0 and face the American Falls Beavers next Friday at Sugar-Salem.
