Lady Cats pick up road win at Pocatello
|
Those worries were justified. The 4A Indians didn't record their first basket until the second quarter and never could recover in a 44-27 loss to the 5A Bobcats at the Palace.
Considering the circumstances, though, Hough and his team weren't disheartened after the defeat.
"We actually played better than I thought," the coach said. "They did all right."
Madison hassled the young Pocatello lineup from the beginning, employing a full-court zone trapping scheme that frazzled the Indians, who played with only eight players in uniform.
The frantic pace kept the Indians focused on advancing the ball past halfcourt rather than setting up their offense, and after one quarter, the Bobcats led 9-2, with both Pocatello points coming from Kelsey Parker free throws.
"It's frustrating," said the junior Parker of Madison's defense. "We know what we need to do, but we tried to rush it too fast. We need to slow it down and do it right."
Junior Becca Aplington scored the Indians' first field goal of the night off a putback at the 6:56 mark of the second quarter, and she followed that up with a layup off a steal to make the score 11-6 Madison.
That five-point deficit was as close as the game would be the rest of the way.
The Bobcats took a 21-9 lead into halftime, and Madison junior Brin Neff ended all doubt by knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a layup midway through the third quarter to make it 33-15.
Neff led all scorers with 16 points. Parker paced Pocatello with 11 points followed by Aplington, who scored seven.
With his top two post players on the bench in street clothes, Hough turned to a pair of sophomores -- Amanda Clark and Milli Mower -- down low, and that experience early in the season will pay off later in the year, Hough said.
"My two big post players were sophomores, and they got a lot of minutes tonight," he said. "That's a good thing."
When the Indians face off against two more 5A foes next week -- Wednesday at Twin Falls and Thursday at home against Highland -- Hough expects to return to full strength.
At that time, Pocatello expects to dramatically improve.
"It'll be a huge help," Aplington said. "It's hard being out there with little rest. Once we get them back, we'll be good."
