Comprehensive plan approved by Rexburg council
|
Rexburg's comprehensive plan has been the focus of many months of work by the mayor, the City Council, city planners and consultants. The document is titled the "City of Rexburg Vision '2020.'"
"This plan is so much better than the one it replaces, as it covers a lot more detail," stated Rexburg City Councilman Rex Erickson in a news release from the city. "It is a good guide for anyone who wants to come to Rexburg to do business, and gives them a clear understanding of the city's expectations."
The comprehensive plan is the official statement of the City Council setting forth its major policies concerning desirable future physical development. It gives city's land-use preferences and provides a foundation for the zoning process, giving where Rexburg's commercial and residential growth should occur. The plan lays out goals for the city's growth, including areas for future parks and trails, as well as specifying areas suited for business, industrial and residential development.
An introductory statement in the plan sets down its overall purpose: "Rexburg is in the middle of substantial changes. As these changes are made, it is important that they be compatible with the efficient functioning of the rest of the community for the present and for the future."
During August and September the plan went through its final stages in work meetings and public hearings, including discussion of the final version of the land-use map that goes with the plan.
The map was passed by the City Council in September.
The development of Rexburg's comprehensive plan has been coordinated with comprehensive planning efforts in Madison County and Sugar City. The joint planning effort has been coordinated to look forward at least 20 years to anticipate how the community will accommodate changes in population, demographic, economic, and social trends.
