Sugar-Salem tops Rigby

Sugar-Salem's Molly Orme (24) struggles to maintain her balance as she is guarded closely by a Rigby defender under the basket during the first half of Tuesday night's game at Sugar-Salem High School. The Lady Diggers defeated Rigby by a score of 56-31.

SUGAR CITY -- The Sugar-Salem Lady Diggers overcame some early jitters and cruised to a 56-31 win over Rigby in their home-opener on Tuesday night.

"We were a little bit tight playing our first home game," said Sugar-Salem girls basketball coach Todd Jensen.

But once they got rolling, the Lady Diggers showed why they are currently ranked No. 1 in the state.

"I was proud of half-court defense," Jensen said. "Defense is a team thing and it is something that we are emphasizing this year."

Sugar-Salem held a slim 10-6 lead after the opening period, but turned on the burners in the second, outscoring Rigby 17-10 in the period to take a 27-16 lead into halftime.

Brooke Hansen finished with 13 points and nine steals to pace Sugar-Salem. Katelyn Palmer added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Sugar-Salem (3-0) will play at Snake River on Thursday.

At Driggs, the North Fremont Lady Huskies used a 26-point fourth period to rally from a nine-point second half deficit en route to a 46-40 win over Teton on Tuesday night.

"We didn't get much offense early," said North Fremont coach Ben Lenz. "But our defense was strong throughout the game."

Much of North Fremont's troubles offensively were attributed to Teton's Laurel Kearsley.

"We were a little intimidated by Kearsley," Lenz said. "She caused us some fits in the first half."

But in the second half, Kearsley got into foul trouble, allowing North Fremont to gain momentum.

Jessica Lee had 15 points to pace North Fremont, while Allisa Harrigfeld had 14 in the win.

Harrigfeld has scored 40 points through the first two games for North Fremont.

North Fremont will play at Clark County on Thursday.
