Crews clear canal banks again

ST. ANTHONY -- A year after a canal neighbor threatened a lawsuit related to trees being removed during a similar canal bank cleanup, the Salem-Union Canal Co. is back at work along the canal, trimming and removing trees in St. Anthony.
The canal runs through the back and side yards of several homes on the south side of St. Anthony.
As red-shirted St. Anthony Work Camp inmates wielded chain saws to trim and fall trees, neighbors sat and stood in groups, watching the crews and heavy equipment as work proceeded Tuesday along the canal.
Backhoes loaded trucks that hauled away the debris.
Glen Armstrong, a work camp employee supervising the inmates, said some of the neighbors seemed to like the idea of the tree trimming and cleaning and others didn't.
Idaho law gives canal companies the right to enter land to maintain and clean the canal and its banks.
Last year when trees were removed near his property, St. Anthony resident Bob Reiley threatened a lawsuit, claiming the canal company had gone too far in its cleanup.
This year the newspaper received one call critical of the operation.
Jerry Dalling, the canal company president, couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
Last year when contacted, he apologized to homeowners who were upset.
"We've made every effort to minimize the work we think is in the best interest of the canal company stockholders and the safety of the neighbors," he said then. "We felt like we were reasonable and stayed within the law."
