Giving blood directly helps southeastern Idahoans

REXBURG --- Madison County and the City of Rexburg will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive on Nov. 25 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Rexburg Fire Station.
This is the fourth blood drive sponsored by Rexburg and Madison County this year.
"We host these events four times every year," said city representative, Pam Wren. "These donation events have been taking place for over a decade, but this year we have been experiencing a decline in interest. So it is essential that we have individuals come in and donate on Tuesday."
When someone comes in and donates blood, they are directly helping another individual in the southeastern Idaho area.
One hundred percent of all donated blood will be used in this area," said Christel Gladstone, Senior Donor Recruiter at the Idaho Falls Red Cross. "We are the sole supplier of blood to Madison Memorial Hospital, the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and all local clinics."
According to the Red Cross representatives, donated blood is usable for 42 days but individuals can only donate safely every 56 days.
This time difference means that new blood is always needed keep hospitals and other medical centers continually supplied.
"The best gift that can be given is the gift of life," said Gladstone. "This is especially true during the holiday season."
According to city officials, 32 individual donations are needed.
If individuals are interested in giving blood, appointments can be made with Pam Wren at City Hall by calling 359-3020 ext. 340, or by contacting Dot Legan at the Madison County Offices at 359-6245.
