ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Going out a champion

Brooke Hansen

Published: Friday, November 7, 2008 11:59 PM MST
Not many high school athletes win multiple state championships.

But Sugar-Salem's Brooke Hansen isn't your typical high school athlete. As a senior, Hansen has been a part of six state championship teams in her time in high school.

The most recent came last week as the Sugar-Salem volleyball team defeated St. Maries for the 2008 3A Idaho State Volleyball Championship. It was Sugar-Salem's third straight title in volleyball.

Over the course of the two-day tournament, Hansen finished with 49 kills and 54 digs, securing her a spot on the all-state first team.

As a result of her efforts, Hansen has been selected as this week's Standard Journal Athlete of the Week.

"It feels really good," Hansen said of her latest state championship. "It's an amazing feeling, especially my senior year. It's been an amazing ride that's for sure."

In addition to the three state volleyball titles, Hansen has also been a part of Sugar-Salem's two state track championship teams from the previous two years. As a sophomore, Hansen played a key role in the Lady Diggers winning the 3A state basketball crown.

During the track season, Hansen takes part in the 4x100, long jump and the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

The Sugar-Salem senior says this most recent state title means the most to her.

"It's the most special because it's my senior year," Hansen said. "In the past, we've worked so hard to help the seniors win theirs, and now I win it as a senior."

Hansen says the secret to her success can be boiled down to three things.

"Hard work, having a positive attitude and making friends," she said.

When she isn't taking part in any athletic endeavor, Hansen can usually be found hanging out with friends and riding horses.

After high school, Hansen plans to attend college to pursue a career in the nursing field. She is leaning toward attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah on a track scholarship. However, she is exploring all of her options before making a final decision.

When asked if Sugar-Salem can make it four volleyball state titles in row, Hansen didn't hestitate.

"I definitely do," she said. "They just got to have faith in themselves."
