A wild day of soccer action

Bobcats stay alive; Diggers head to state

REXBURG -- The Madison Bobcats lived to play another day.

The Bobcats got goals from Ty Shiffler and Kelton Peck on Tuesday to defeat Highland 2-0 in a 5A District IV-V-VI loser-out match at Madison Middle School in Rexburg.

"I thought we played a pretty good game," said Madison coach Joe Paredes. "We had several chances to add to the lead."

S h i f f l e opened the scoring for the Bobcats in the 27th minute of the match on an assist from Daniel Fisher. In the 10th minute of the second half, Peck kicked in a shot off a corner kick from Jason Ward.

"We had to win it," Paredes said. "The seniors - Kelton Peck, Daniel Fisher and Ty Shiffler - all did a superb job of picking up the younger kids."

With the season on the line, the Bobcats left it all out on the field.

"We were just going after the ball," the Madison coach said. "We knew we had to win the game."

With the win, the Bobcats will face Twin Falls in another loser-out match on Thursday in Rexburg.

"We've got to come out with the same mentality," Paredes said.

The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the district's second-place match on Saturday.

Sugar-Salem 2

South Fremont 0

At Shelley, the Sugar-Salem Diggers clinched a spot in the state tournament with a 2-0 win over the Cougars in the Mountain River Conference tournament title match at Shelley High School on Tuesday.

For the Diggers, it is the third straight year that they will be participating in the state tournament.

"I feel relieved and am happy for the kids," said Sugar-Salem coach Oscar Bustos.

The Diggers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Kyle Andrews scored 90 seconds into the match to give Sugar-Salem a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Spencer Galbraith.

In the 11th minute, Andrews was able to curve a corner kick into the back of the net for Sugar-Salem's second goal.

"He was the hero," Bustos said of Andrews.

For South Fremont, it as a disappointing day.

"They got a couple of quick goals and that is all they needed," said South Fremont coach Shayn Blair.

heads to state with one idea in mind.

"This year we are going to do better," Bustos said.

South Fremont can still make it to the state tournament, but must beat Teton in today's loser-out match.

"They will have to pick it up," Blair said. "They were kind of down."

The winner of today's play-in match will advance to play an opponent from District V on Saturday..

Teton 6 North Fremont 1

In the 3A loser-out match, the Redskins built a 4-0 lead in the first half and cruised to the 6-1 win.

"We didn't have anything left," said North Fremont coach Dave Jacobson. "We don't have a big enough squad to play that many matches."

The Huskies won Saturday's play-in game over Shelley before losing Monday to Sugar-Salem, sending them into today's elimination match.

Riggan Garcia scored North Fremont's lone goal in the 72nd minute off the match off a free kick from Joseph Anderson.

"The kids gave their best effort," Jacobson said. The Huskies finish the season with a 3-11-1 mark.

v GIRLS SOCCER

DRIGGS -- The Sugar-Salem Lady Diggers opened the 3A District VI tournament with a 3-0 loss to Shelley on Tuesday.

The Lady Diggers will face South Fremont today in an elimination match.

"The girls need to realize what they have and put it to work," said Sugar-Salem girls coach Jorge Orduno.

Skyline 1, Madison 0

At Rexburg, the Madison Lady Bobcats had their season end in a 1-0 decision in a loser-out match at Madison Middle School.

Madison finishes the season with an 11-6-2 mark.
