Rexburg Republicans energized by national conventi

STEPHAN SAVOLA/Associated Press--Republican presidential candidate, Sen., John McCain, R-Ariz., listens to the applause of supporters after his nomination acceptance speech.

REXBURG - Republican delegates fresh from St. Paul, Minn., and the GOP convention are bringing back excitement for the party and for the coming two months of campaigning until the presidential election in November.

The delegates at the convention nominated Arizona Sen. John McCain for president and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as vice president and local delegates couldn't be happier.

"There's a lot of new energy in the party," Madison County party chairman Ron Nate said.

District seven chairman Marsha Bjornn also said she came out of the Xcel Center on cloud nine.

"We felt like Palin energized the party and she energized (McCain)," Bjornn said. "All of them agreed they all thought Palin was the high point of the convention."

Bjornn also said any doubts she had about McCain have been dispelled.

"We thought that McCain's talk was really good," she said. "He really is a man of a lot of depth and character."

Now that all the cheering is out of the way, the delegates can get to work for their candidate. Bjornn said the strategy is simple.

"We just got to get the word out that (Democratic Party candidate Barack) Obama's not the only person for change," Bjornn said.

Nate agreed with that strategy.

"The real ticket of change is the McCain-Palin ticket," Nate said. "I don't see how two senators from Washington can bring realistic change."

There are a few Republican Party events planned, including the first College Republicans meeting at Brigham Young University-Idaho on Sept. 11, debate night parties during the Obama-McCain debates coming up and a grass roots involvement training session on Oct. 11. Following the convention, the tired delegates will get a little rest before getting back to work for the maverick McCain, who made it clear he's not a party man, but a man who votes his conscience.

And that could be a good thing according to Bjornn.

"He's going to pull in independents, he's going to pull in Democrats - he's the man of the hour for this time."
