Taking Their Time

ST. ANTHONY - The Fremont County Planning and Zoning Commission is taking its time and trying to get it right before voting on a draft comprehensive plan.
The commission held two public hearings last month on the draft and an accompanying preferred land use map.
More than 95 percent of the comments have been favorable or suggest only minor adjustments, according to P&Z Chairman Kirk Mackert.
One meeting was in St. Anthony and the other in Ashton. Both were well attended.
In fact, the plan has been built from public comment, as several public meetings were held throughout the county before the draft was written to determine the direction people wanted to
see the plan to go.
And two subcommittees of the P&Z Commission also worked on land use, developing maps and the role of agriculture in the mix.
Taking all written and oral testimony, the P&Z members held a work meeting Monday to review what they had and try to reach a decision.
According to Mackert, at 10 p.m. he suggested the discussion be continued to another meeting.
The commission decided to put the issue on the agenda for Monday's P&Z meeting and try again.
With support running high for the draft, it's likely the P&Z will vote to recommend that the County Commission approve it.
Mackert said there are a few minor tweaks that likely will be made to the draft, but nothing major enough to require a rehearing before the P&Z.
Once the county commissioners get the draft, they also will hold a public hearing before voting on the plan.
Yet to come is completion of the more controversial document, the draft development code revision. The P&Z also is scheduled to talk about potential code amendments at it meeting Monday.
