Chester woman has a moment of fame
|
BY ROBERT PATTEN/Standard Journal
In September, Delores Blanchard of Chester, took a trip to Southern California with her mother, her daughter and granddaughter to see sights like the ocean and the LDS temple in San Diego. They also enjoyed Tijuana.
Since Blanchard's 92-year-old mother wanted to see "The Price is Right" and it was close to her birthday, the four generations decided to wait nine hours to get seats to watch the 35-year-old game show.
Contestants are picked from the 325-member audience, but Blanchard was stunned when her name was called. "I was hoping my mother would get on (the show)," she said.
When the 82-year-old host, Bob Barker, learned the age of Blanchard's mother he said, "I'm glad there's someone in here older than I am!"
Blanchard sat in the contestants' row. In the rules of the game show, if she had the closest bid to the price of the items on display – in this case, a tennis ball-throwing machine and an electric fireplace – she would move from her seat to the stage. But she bid too low and couldn't continue. And once people get on the show, they can't come back for a second try.
Blanchard said she wasn't disappointed – she was just excited she got to be on TV and in the same room as Barker. Plus, she walked away with prizes.
